Lifestyle: Mycro Keratin Treatment
Before embracing the curly girl method I was always looking for new methods to remove the frizz and tame my hair to enable me to keep my hair natural and reduce the use of heat tools. I was introduced to the mycro keratin treatment by my hairdresser and I decided to try it out. I am not a hairstylist or hair expert. This is merely a recording of my experience with the treatment and life with untamed and unruly hair.
Although the outcome is straight forward, the application takes about 90 minutes if done correctly. I have had the treatment done at two different salons with two very different results. The process set-out by the Mycro Keratin brand, which was followed by the second salon is as follows: -
- Double-Wash hair with mycro keratin clarifying shampoo.
- Dry your hair with a hairdryer.
- Section your hair and apply the mycro keratin treatment evenly, combing the treatment into your hair.
- Enjoy a beverage while you allow your hair to absorb the treatment.
- Section your hair and apply heat to lock the treatment into your hair, this is done by use of a hair straightener.
- Apply the mycro keratin booster treatment.
- Leave the salon, allowing a minimum of 2 days to pass before you wash your hair.
A common mistake that I experience the first time I had the treatment done was washing my hair at the salon after applying the booster treatment. In order for the treatment to work, you need to give your hair at least 48 hours to absorb sufficient protein, hence washing it after two days from application. My hair only lasted one was after washing my hair at the salon the same day I did the treatment. This was really disheartening as the mycro keratin treatment is an expensive treatment and claims to last between 4 to 6 months. Another essential when having the treatment done is to stay hydrated. During step 5, there is a strong chemical smell that dehydrates you. It is vital that you keep bottled water with you to sip on throughout the treatment.
Once you have the mycro keratin treatment you will notice that your hair is smoother and there is less frizz. I generally have the treatment done before going on holiday because it takes me about one to one and a half hours to do my hair which is not the best scenario when you need to leave your accommodation early in the morning to explore. Unlike a permanent straightening treatment, the mycro keratin does not take away your curls. What it does do is make it wavier. To ensure that you get a full 4 to 6 month’s use of the treatment, mycro keratin has formulated shampoo and conditioner to use. The conditioner adds keratin back into your hair with each wash. It is important to consult your hairdresser when considering the mycro keratin treatment factoring in the cost of the treatment and the cost of the care products. The right hairdresser makes all the difference and ensures that you get a quality treatment that is worth the money that you spent.
My pros and cons of the mycro keratin treatment:
Pros
• Hair looks shiny and healthy
• Softens hair
• Stress-free holiday
• Adds keratin back into your hair
• Lasts 4 to 6 months (if done correctly)
Cons
• Expensive
• Process is very long (+/- 90 minutes)
• Purchase care products to maintain treatment
• Strong smell when applying heat to your hair
• Heat tools are used in the application
I thoroughly enjoyed having the mycro keratin treatment done as it really helped strengthen my hair and reduce my frizz which was a lifesaver during my holidays. However as mentioned at the inception of this post, I am now following the curly girl method now that the treatment is out of my hair and I won't be going to any salons for reapplication during the pandemic.
